“Nonlinear analysis” is a term thrown out in the world of structural analysis more frequently thanks to the requirements of the current AISC 14th Ed. code. The chapter “Design for Stability” and cl. C2 of this code states “the analysis shall be a second-order analysis that considers both P- D and P- d effects…”

Second-order analysis is a form of nonlinear analysis along with structural geometric nonlinearity, material nonlinearity, support condition nonlinearity, or a combination of all. This is where most of the confusion comes into the picture.

In a busy production environment where design and drawing deliverables are needed, the tendency is to utilize available tools to get designs out of the door quickly. With a new major code analysis requirement, engineers really need to step back to see the “why,” “where,” “how,” and “what” before attempting to apply the information discussed in the newer versions of these design codes. This presentation shows how engineers could grasp the analysis requirements of the current AISC 14th Ed. code and use it with more confidence and appropriately without having to do any complicated and elaborate hand verification calculations.

Ravi Ozarker is the GT STRUDL Support Consultant for Hexagon. As a structural engineer and engineering software developer for the past 13 years, he has worked for several organizations in different roles, such as consulting engineering, government agencies, semi government agencies, software companies, EPCs, transmission tower design corporations, research universities, and air pollution modeling and monitoring in the U.S. and Canada.
