SDS/2 and Intergraph Smart 3D: ‘We Have Taken the Problem Away’

Intergraph Smart 3D is leveraging its integration with SDS/2‘s new module for structural and civil engineering tools to improve inter-discipline communication and streamline data to fabrication.

SDS/2 Interim CEO Stuart Broome took time during HxGN LIVE digital solutions conference in Las Vegas earlier this summer to discuss what issues this integration can ameliorate.

According to Broome, structural connection design has historically been introduced far too late into the process. This is problematic because poorly-executed connections can interfere with piping on plant-related structures.

“There are cost implications,” he said.

In recent years, the “more forward-thinking firms” and in particular the large engineering and EPC firms have started to bring that process further forward, he said, even as early as front end engineering design. Connection detailing is time consuming and complex, but the biggest challenge in this work flow is the management of data.

When Smart 3D is integrated with the SDS/2 steel detailing tool, there is no additional, external tool needed to pass back information. The necessary technology is built in, “and there’s not anything else out there that does that.”

“What it effectively does is turns Smart 3D into a constructible modeling solution,” he said.  “What we’ve actually done is not solved the problem … we’ve taken the problem away. It doesn’t exist any more.”
